|

OK before you get on my case I understand that indie just means signed to an independent label and isn't actually the name of any particular genre, but it's more convenient and overarching than the other genre names.
I guess if you really cared, you could say I'm looking for alternative, psychedelic, maybe even shoegaze...
ANYWAY
I've been into this kind of music lately, and I was just wondering if anyone can recommend me some good bands. For reference, some of my favorites right now:
The Antlers
Silversun Pickups
Brand New
The Main Drag
Marble Sounds
My Morning Jacket
Those bands are all fucking incredible.
So yeah. I'm open to any suggestions, and I love expanding my music catalog.
Neutral Milk Hotel are off limits though. I already know of them and I don't find them incredible by any means so please don't suggest them. Thanks _________________

Modest Mouse seem to be a solid recommendation in this area for a lot of people, give them a shot? _________________

For the love of tits, how can you be on the internet in 2012 and not think "maybe I can Google this word I should have learned in first grade before making a thread about it". |

Pavement
EDIT: I saw Marble Sounds once opening for I am Oak (which is a really good folk band in itself, by the way). Pretty cool music. |

Tubelord and Meet Me in St. Louis are just a couple I'll throw out there. _________________

How in the hell you don't know about more indie bands is beyond me, yksi.
Andrew Jackson Jihad for your folk fix, Car Seat Headrest for your lo-fi fix, Have a Nice Life for your 128kbps shoegaze feels, Glocca Morra and Dads for your recent emo fix, and Midori for some jazz-punk.
If you're looking for more shoegaze, I have a bunch of really awesome Japanese shoegaze I can get you into if you want to give it a shot. _________________

Can't say I'm a fan of anyone on No Sleep, but Topshelf has The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die (and Empire! Empire! too I guess), and those guys are pretty fucking sweet. Some awsome post-rock emo sort of stuff from them.

Give these artists a listen. I'll point out some of my favorite albums from them in parentheses:
Arcade Fire (listen to Funeral)
Band of Horses (Cease to Begin)
Blind Pilot (3 Rounds and a Sound)
Bloc Party
Delta Spirit
Dispatch (Bang Bang)
Foster the People (Torches)
Franz Ferdinand (s/t and You Could Have It So Much Better)
Grouplove
Passion Pit (Manners)
Two Door Cinema Club (Tourist History)
Young the Giant (s/t)
Seriously, these are all great. Some fall closer towards alternative, but it's all good. Lots of variety in there. My favorites out of that are definitely the Arcade Fire album (I liked it almost instantly), Band of Horses (all of the songs on CtE are great, as are theirs others), Franz (longtime favorite, Take Me Out isn't even one of their best!), Foster, Young the Giant, and Dispatch (great singalong album). _________________

I'll heartily second this, with 'Everything All The Time' as a specific album suggestion. So much love for that.
Should probably throw Rilo Kiley into the suggestions somewhere too. _________________
