Whenever I do this fix, I never get any more double strums. However, it is a fix that requires "maintenance," since every so often the tape finds a way to fall off the switch and you need to put new pieces on. I say it's a small price to pay to get rid of overstrums, though.

My guitar hero 5 guitar(xbox 360) just started double strumming about 3-5 times a song. Is this something I could try?

I would recommend it. It's not very hard to do; anyone with steady hands and a screwdriver could pull it off, and it works very well at preventing the strums.
