Either Diablo Swing Orchestra (although they're pretty well known in some parts) or Grace Cathedral Park. I highly recommend the latter as great relaxation/sleep music.

If you have a chocolate bar in your heart I suggest seeking medical attention.

Russian heavy metal band Ария is quite unknown outside of Russia. They're still very good though, you can hear songs of them on YouTube.
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhOT15pYcc4

Streetlight Manifesto is underappreciated but I wouldn't say unknown ska punk. They're REALLY good.

Tally Hall - semi-local (they're from Ann Arbor), formerly indie but they're not anymore, their songs "The Bidding" and "Greener" are both amazing.

Portugal. The Man - Indie/alt/experimental band. Their album Waiter: "You Vultures!" is great all the way through.

Maps & Atlases - Math/indie/alt rock. People have probably heard of them, but their album Tree, Swallows, Houses is ridiculously solid.

Those are a few offhand.

I'm Not A Pilot-

"Milwaukee based indie rock band, “I’m Not A Pilot”, began in the winter of 2008 and just released their first EP, notable among local Milwaukee bands, for its lack of guitars. All songs are written and constructed around frontman Mark Glatzel's soaring vocals and intricate piano work. Peter Thomas, cellist in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, adds melodic and harmonic bursts of energy through his ‘guitar simulated’ electric cello playing. Matt Glatzel (bass) and Steve Vorass (drums) provide the driving rhythm that fuels the entire sound of the quartet."

Ratatat's "Loud Pipes" was in MLB 06 the Show, and I think a couple movies. It was also in the Boxxy loop video where she says "You's trollin', I'm not trollin'". Although I haven't heard anything else by them, so I guess they are unknown outside of that song. It's a pretty good song too

Tommy Emmanuel - He's not technically a band, but he's my favorite guitar player ever. He's also the guy in my avatar. I was lucky enough to see him in concert.......awesome. While he's relatively unknown in the US, he's apparently pretty big in his native Australia.

See You Next Tuesday - Mathcore group from the mid-Michigan area.

Incredible post. Especially the Portugal mention.

THIS. One of the few bands I can say I've followed from the start.

To continue with the Michigan bands, go listen to Fireworks. Amazing pop punk band. They're certainly growing in popularity, but still unknown as far as I can tell. (I feel like the majority of my posts nowadays are about this band, haha)

Eisley is a pretty awesome, relatively unknown band. They're signed to a major label (Warner), but they're still not very well-known outside of Texas, and Warner doesn't exactly do a good job of promoting them.

They're a pretty mellow indie band, so I get the feeling most SHers wouldn't care for them, but I absolutely love them.

As of right now, they've only got 2 full albums, but they have several EPs out there. At least 5 of them.

My cousin's band Diamond Plate, they are a thrash band from the suburbs of chicago. They are really good, especially seeing their oldest member is 17. www.myspace.com/diamondplate1

They have an EP out right now and it's pretty solid. I think they got signed too, but I'm not sure what label.

Those guys are pretty good, I probably buy one of their albums the next time I go on a music buying spree.

Btw, I realize I might have been a bit altruistic with my gigantic post of bands on the first page. I'll chose my 3 favorites out of the list and give a description later tonight.

Seeing Portugal. the man posted makes me think of a few of my girlfriend's favorite bands...

Dr. Manhattan
Ludo (okay, i like them too)
The Format
Fun (format spinoff i believe)

She digs the really underground indie rock stuff. I went to a Ludo show with her and a couple bands that played that were pretty good were:

Ha ha tonka
meese

Some of my favorite unknowns

Burden of a Day
The Faceless
Psyopus
Marc Rizzo (guitarist for soulfly, acra introduced the custom scene to him a bit ago)
Kiko Loureiro (guitarist for angra, same as above)
Guthrie Govan
Circus Maximus (European progressive metal, good stuff)
Motionless in White
Destroy the Runner
The Word Alive (craig from ETF's side project, GREAT stuff)
Celesty (fantastic power/symphonic metal band)
Steel Attack
Maximum the Hormone (unknown to a LOT of people)

Some are probably more known than others but if you went up to some rando and asked if they'd heard of any of these, likely they'd have heard of very very few.

Radio Suicide is an amazing band. They broke up about a year ago, though.

I would disagree that the Faceless are unknown, I mean, they toured with In Flames, BTBAM & 3IoB. Not to mention they sell their shirts at hot topic.

Caifanes - Aqui no es asi(i guess that means its not like that in here)
