Psychostick: awesome comedy metal.

Some songs:
The megasuperhit BEER!...
...and the follow-up
Fake My Own Death and Go Platinum (Should be on RB/GH along with...)
This Is Not A Song, It's A Sandwich (...this...)
#1 Radio $ingle (...and this)
Girl Directions
P Is The Best Letter
And my personal favorite:
We Ran Out Of CD Space

I could list over a thousand bands, although here are some not very well known bands that I love (most is not extremely obscure)

Antisect (anarchopunk)
Anti-Cimex (Crust/anarchopunk/d-beat)
At The Gates [first album only] (avant garde blackened death metal)
Moss Icon (post-hardcore)
Solitude Aeturnus (doom metal)

@ The poster above me, those bands are not screamo, this is what screamo is. Those bands are post-hardcore/melodic metalcore crossovers that are basically rip-offs of the band Refused only with (usually) an excessive use of breakdowns, uncreative riffing, and several accessible whilst degrading element. And Dot Dot Curve? Seriously?

Anyway, Evile and The Black Dahlia Murder (which I actually did hear of before RB)

Is that a joke...? Everybody and their brother (and their mother) listens to or has heard of Evile and BDM...

I'll go with Jungle Rot, well known maybe in the underground, but not much else.

I didn't go through the entire thread but just some bands that people should know about but don't would be:

Nile
Divine Heresy
Shadows Fall
Opeth
Muse
War of Ages
Liquid Tension Experiment
Symphony X
Nightwish

All of these are based on my experiences with people not knowing bands btw

muse. muse...
Muse is well known. I'll refrain from a paragraph long rant.

As for fairly unknown but good bands:
I Set my Friends on Fire (they're pretty well known now though really)
Cries Hannah
Dark Tranqulity
Enter Shikari
Bubblegum Octopus
Dr. Acula
Drist (even though anyone on here will know them)
Scar Symmetry
Skyfire
Draco and the Malfoys

@FlyingMonkey: Muse is the most popular band on last.fm, they are far from unknown. Nile is one of the most popular death metal bands, Opeth are incredibly popular, Symphony X is an extremely well known prog metal band, Nightwish is an incredibly overrated symphonic metal band, Shadows Falls are probably the most eminent melodic metalcore band, and Liquid Tension Experiment is a supergroup featuring members from the massively popular band Dream Theater.

I'll throw out some post-hardcore bands, from relatively underground to very obscure.

Drive Like Jehu
The Jesus Lizard
Jawbox
Jawbreaker
Unwound
Rodan
(post-rock/post-hardcore)
Fugazi (you really all should know about them, but I'm sure most of you guys don't know any post-hardcore besides At The Drive-In)
Wipers
Nation of Ulysses
Native Nod
Moss Icon

Also, while not unknown bands, the genre probably isn't known around here, try some trip-hop bands like:

Massive Attack
Portishead
DJ Shadow

Muse is ranked number 1 in terms of both play count and unique listeners. But yes, in terms of total plays The Beatles are number one.

Oh yes, those are all great acts. I saw Portishead a couple of months back actually, brilliant show. Although all three of those were and still are very popular, at least here.

I try to rep them as much as possible in my avatar, but I can't say enough about Eluveitie (El-way-tee, oddly enough).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijKLHCQw5o&feature=fvst

Swiss folk metal with violin/bagpipe/hurdy-gurdy action. Their newest album is all acoustic, but I believe another heavier album should be coming soon. Check out all of 'Slania', and you won't regret it.

A very good metal band closer to traditional metal than anything I guess:
Professor

I discovered them by the friend's list on Holy Grail's myspace. Also another pretty unknown band. Some may have discovered these guys through White Wizzard.

I discovered THOSE GUYS from Early Man which are probably also unknown.
