Punk is a well liked genre but recommendations and discussions seem pretty scarce here (sans the lifeless hardcore thread)

I love most British and 70s era punk rock. I have inherited a modest but nice collection of these records from my dad on vinyl, which I'm currently in the process of ripping to PC. Most of them are on one list or another up there, although there are some great ones such as the Damned which are pretty awesome too.

Currently listening to Chairs Missing by Wire; awesome, awesome record.

This is pretty awesome. I am a fan of Bad Religion and Mission of Burma and have been looking to dabble more into punk. Thanks!

A few have already been mentioned but I figured I'd give my recommendations...

Descendents - They started out as hardcore punk but gradually became a pop punk band. Good starter album would be I Don't Want to Grow Up and also their second live album Hallraker.

Misfits - Call them what you want, but they've definitely got some punk in them. If you can find the first 3 LPs (I have no idea why the first album took so longer to be released in its entirety) definitely have a listen if you aren't familiar with them. Their "debut" album Static Age has the raw, unpolished feel of a first album from a punk band.

Dead Kennedys - They put out a compilation album that I frequently listen to called Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death that has a bunch of B-sides from their earlier stuff. Good stuff, including the impromptu Saturday Night Holocaust.

Fifteen - Good political punk band. I've only had a chance to listen to Survivor, their last album (once again, hard to find their stuff), but Greed is a great track.

Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material, enough said.

There is a complete playlist of Unknown Pleasures on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=0DC245602FB8CD4F&search_query=joy+division+unknown+pleasures

The album is total sex. WHERE WILL IT EEEEH-EEEND!!!

All the tracks from Closer are also on youtube, though not in a playlist; start here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AqeqAQ1ILI

and work your way through the album.

Great post dabears, you've given me months of work to do!

Walk Among Us should be in everyone's vocabulary.

Sorry to double post, but this post had different content.

I suggest The Pixies - Surfer Rosa for the list, that album always had a very Post Punk feeling to me, and is totally brilliant. Again, here is a playlist with the entire album:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1FE019826CD9BEFC&search_query=pixies+surfer+rosa

Proto Punk is totally not complete without:

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
The Velvet Underground - White Light / White Heat

Also, my favorite of all bands, The Mekons, who are probably the most underappreciated band of all time (probably) deserve a spot.

Mekons - Fear and Whiskey
Mekons - The Mekons Rock n' Roll

Finally:

Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II
The Specials - The Specials

I'm really having a hard time calling VU proto-punk. They influenced punk, but when you compare them to MC5 and the Stooges, you see the difference. I'll add VU & Nico nevertheless, for it is an amazing album. The Pixies is way to big of a stretch IMO (VU even is). The same applies to the Meat Puppets and The Specials. They really do seem out of place on a punk recommendation list. I feel if those are included (and I still feel uneasy with VU on there), it would mean bands from Sonic Youth to the Violent Femmes deserve a place on this list.

I'll check out Meckons, I've never heard of them.

These are all very subjective distinctions of course, and in the end it does not really matter what you label a bands music as; but i really think the VU should count as protopunk. Sure, Raw Power holds a bigger claim then VU&Nico, maybe the VU should be protoprotopunk. I dunno.

Good music is good music, the thread has done it's job if it makes just one person dig into some of the excellent sounds in your post.

The Mekons have been around since the early days of punk rock, their first single was released around the same time as the Clash's debut. They are still around today, playing shows in Chicago frequently. Their catolouge is huge and varied, from their beginnings as standard british punk rock, through country mescalineish punk, to straight rock and roll, to synth popish with a hard edge, to folk, and on and on, always with a stunning constancy of quality; truly one of the greatest bands of all time.

Here is a link to one of their first singles to get you started:

You could check out the earlier Social Distortion albums. Mommy's Little Monster, Prison Bound and White Light, White Heat, White Trash all have their fair share of great, hardcore-esque punk songs. Then again, I like their later stuff better than their earlier stuff, but it's not really "punk" in the same sense. Heck, I'm not even sure what they should be called these days (you guys can have fun figuring that out), but it's fucking good music.

Sorry, I accidentally hit the "quote" button instead of the "edit" button. Should've slowed down there.

I'm having trouble calling the Pixies post-punk in any meaningful sense of the term, however they are still completely fucking brilliant to this day and, if I were the sort of person who had idols, Kim Deal would probably still be it.

Anyway: how do we feel about the post-punk revival stuff? Bands like Bloc Party, The Futureheads (their first album, anyway), Interpol etc.

Also, Lagwagon. Call them whatever you like - Wikipedia variously goes for punk rock, melodic hardcore and pop punk, the latter of which I think is a bit wrong, but they made what I regarded for a long time as my favourite album ever. I still maintain that they were responsible for reigniting my love for music after I'd completely lost interest around the end of the 90s.

The fact that Refused isn't in any of these charts (or really mentioned in this thread) is sad. They were very influential for the hardcore sound we know today. Seriously, you guys need to check out The Shape Of Punk To Come, it's such a great album. Here's an... interesting description of it

Refused is on there, it's under post-hardcore. And yes, it is a great album.

Anyways, I'll get around to listening to the recommended punk albums in this thread from some of you guys, I'm overwhelmed with new music every day (in fact I only have about 15 gigs left on my laptops hard drive out of 250)

Ah, sorry I didn't see it there, but shouldn't it count as post-punk or hardcore punk?

You just answered your own question there. If you consider it either post-punk or hardcore punk, you should see it well placed as a post-hardcore album (which it definitely is). Refused seem much more well placed with bands like Moss Icon and Drive Like Jehu, as opposed to the hardcore/crust/d-beat section with bands like Adolescents and Discharge, and the post-punk/gothic/new wave bands like Television and Bauhaus.

Anyways, I added Stiff Little Finger's Inflammable Material to the list.
