What songs to learn ?? New to Guitar.

I would really suggest playing on a acoustic first. It gets you better with the lower action.

I suggest learning:
Alt. Picking
Major Chords (G,C,E, ect.)
How to tune a guitar by ear

Dont try to play fast for now, play fast catches on after a playing for a while.

Also learn some theory like chord progressions (e.g. 1-4-5)

Learn how to improve some Blues rhythm guitar too, it always impresses people.

If you can, try learning how to play a bit of jazz guitar. If you learn to play jazz well, your knowledge of scales and theory would be through the roof, not to mention your ability to improvise. If you go to a school that has a jazz ensemble, talk about joining up or at least practicing the pieces, or just buy a few books on jazz guitar.

This is, of course, something to consider after you get the basic theory and playing down. Jazz is full of complicated chords--usually at least straight dominant 7th chords--and you'll see Dorian and Mixolydian modes used a bit, so it's pretty far down. But if you can learn to play, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. It's not boring or too slow or anything like that, it's just really good music.

It really depends on how good you are at guitar...

When I started, I learnt open chords (open E, G etc etc) which won't come in handy for the metal playing, but will help you get used to different hand positions and switching chords.

Once you can do that, you want to master barred chords such as:

e--5-- < the high sounding e string
b--5--
g--5--
d--7--
a--7--
E--5-- < bottom E string

Also, thats guitar TAB. Learn it, it's not hard and is way easier than music theory (which I can't read past a basic level, but I've played guitar for 5 years). Barred chords are used all the time in mainstream music. Learn some simple songs when you can do this (such as some Greenday stuff, its all power chords and you can sound good easily).

After that, learn a couple of solo's, and practise scales. That'll improve finger strength to no end and build skill level. Start slow, don't try to go to fast or you'll sound bad and get frustrated. Oh, and I cannot stress how important it is to turn the distortion OFF! Practise everything without it off, when you get whatever it is you're trying to practise down with the distortion off, even if its "okay" most of the time, it'll sound very good when everything is set up well

but learn some chord Types too.

Major, Minor, 7th, Minor 7th
5 String Major, 5 String minor, 5 String 7th, 5 String minor 7th.

those are the kinds of chords i learned when i first started lessons.

also The pentatonic/blues scale is good to learn.

If you want easy catchy songs to learn, I would recommend System of a Down. Their songs were the first I ever learned on guitar. (ALONG with practicing exercises for scales, chords, and arpeggios as well if you wish to get really good.)

I'll be going to my local music store and getting tutulage dvd's and basic learning books !!

If made a small list of really easy songs to learn , i'll write it up later, can't right now !!

I'll be learning chords and stuff first when i get my guitar.

Another thing to consider buying is John Petrucci's Rock Discipline. His exercises are complete workouts in themselves, but it will improve your playing and technique A LOT.

-Iron Man (made it all by ear, and I only use the A string)
