Anybody else like their debut? I downloaded it today and was really impressed. It had a lot of the QOTSA sound (Gohl drummed on Songs For The Deaf), but you can definitely hear JPJ's influence on some of the songs on the album. Overall, great debut. The drumming in particular stands out as some of the best Grohl's ever done. Just listen to the ending of Nobody Loves Me and Neither do I and tell me that would be insane in GH/RB. I'd give the album a 4.5/5 and I hope this supergroup doesn't fall apart like they tend to do.

For the record, Them Crooked Vultures is:

Lead Vocals, Guitar: Josh Homme (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sesssions)

Backing Vocals, Drums: Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters)

Bass: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)

Rhythm Guitar (live only):Alain Johannes (What is This?, Eleven)

I've got the album right here next to me (got it for Christmas ) and after a quick listen I've come to a conclusion.
Best debut album I've heard in 2009. Seriously. All the songs seem to flow together, kinda hard to explain - it's like the entire album is just one long song separated by tracks. And I love that kinda thing. Plus, the fact that I have a serious mancrush on EVERY member of the band 'cept Alain Johannes helps as well.
I'm gonna try and get tickets when they come to the UK. They're THAT good.

JPJ? Seriously? Wow, didn't know that. I've only heard New Fang from the constant radio play and Rock Band. Guess I'll need to listen to the rest of the album.

For me, they're the perfect example of a whole being nothing like the sum of its parts.

Given who's involved, they SHOULD be among my favourite bands. I love QOTSA, anything Dave Grohl has ever done and have a healthy respect for Led Zeppelin... but I've listened to the TCV album and it just does nothing for me. If it was anyone else, just three random guys that nobody had ever previously heard of, I don't think it would've got anywhere near as much attention... although, conversely, I'd probably view it a bit more favourably 'cos I wouldn't have had such high expectations.

I don't hear any Dave Grohl or John Paul Jones influence on this allbum. It could have been released as the next Queens of the Stone Age album with no publicity and the only people that would know those two played on it would be the ones that read the liner notes. Which is very surprising because I think Josh Homme is least deserving of the "supergroup" moniker, but I'd be just as disappointed with a Foo Fighters sounding album. Considering that both Homme and Grohl have said what giant fans they were I was really expecting a much more Led Zeppelin-esque experience. That, on top of the already huge let downs of Page & Plant over the years, probably left me with unrealistic expectations.

That said, it IS a good album--much better than the Chickenfoot super-group outing (which is also good)--and probably a little more accessible than any other Queens of the Stone Age album.
