I was livestreaming and my friend goes in and says "Sing the lyrics, you cheat" and he implied I was cheating because I wasn't singing the lyrics (admittedly, I was stumbling over the words because they were too fast for me to read/sing properly at the time).

But in retrospect, he is a vocalist too (a decent one) and he has a point. It was something I used to believe in myself, that you should actually sing the lyrics if you're the vocalist. But I know that some people do not and in fact, the GH games encourage "any means necessary" (you don't have to sing the lyrics).

But does this mean that a vocalist is cheating if he/she is not singing the lyrics correctly? Does mumbling/humming (when there are lyrics) construe as singing or cheating the game?

All answers/opinions are welcome, especially from Vocalists. :)

(PS Just want to say, that I usually try to sing the lyrics and on the rare occasion, when it is too difficult, will hum through instead of singing the lyrics so if it is cheating, then I have!)

No.

I personally never sing the lyrics whenever I'm going for FCs or good scores, AKA any situation that implies competition where it would be relevant to consider the possibility of cheating. My reason is quite simple: some phonems (if that's even a word in English) are not recognized because you can't sing them on a pitch (sss, any hard consonant such as t, d, etc.) even though the game wants you to be on pitch regardless if they occur or not, in many instances.

Plus it would be pretty fucking stupid to invalidate an FC because one single word was wrong, or if the singer skipped a word or anything in the like. You already need to be pretty damn good at singing to get all the correct pitches and it would be too arbitrary (and very stupid as well imo) if we were to call people out for not actually "singing" and hence not playing the game the "right" way. As long as you're using your voice and not an external device, you're using the correct approach, so you're not cheating. Remember that it's a video game, not an actual live performance.

nope, I mostly hum, even if I know the words really well. You only need to hit the pitches, pronunciation doesn't matter
