Linux OS compared to Other OS's

I looked up Linux on Wikipedia today for the first time, because I never was interested before until recently.

I left about 3 sites completely confused on everything about Linux, so can someone break it down for me? How does Linux work install-wise, and what are it's similarities and differences with XP, Vista, and OS X?
