Greasing up a cube will probably knock about 10-20% of your time off going layer by layer. LBL is very ineffective for everything. |

What method would you recommend? I'm still using the LbL method, maybe that's why I'm not really fast. _________________

Jessica Fridrich method is the most common for speedcubing, but it requires a lot of time and memorizing. The average time with this method is ~30 seconds. |

I'd recommend using a fridrich or petrus F2L (first two layers), then solving the last layer using a mutli-look method.
fridrich f2l: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3zmU8O7CKw&feature=related
petrus f2l: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24n6U0wuE68
mutli-look last layer basically means you solve in fewer steps, but you'll need to memorize more algorithms. For example, instead of EOLL (edge orient last layer), CPLL (Corner Permute Last Layer), EPLL (edge permute last layer), COLL (corner orient last layer) which is VERY inefficient, i use a simplified method for most of those steps. First i orient edges, permute corners, then orient the corners using sunes, then permute the edges using 3 algorithms i've memorized. Add on to that a fridrich f2l (a slow one at that) and i've done a 45 second solve or two. It just takes practice.

EDIT: As for the move count, 20 moves is the currently accepted maximum number of moves from any scramble to solve. However, there's no "god's algorithm" documented as of yet (an algorithm to solve the cube from any state), but were there such an algorithm it would be hundreds of moves and the average human couldn't remember it, let alone solve a cube with it as it would likely take years to run into the solved state. _________________

honestly, its been nearly 2 months since someone last posted? oh come on, there's gotta be more cube fans out there!
been awhile, but i bought a 6X6 cube...very tough, and because it came apart slightly upon shipping, solving it will take a lot more work than it should (the inside of the cube is VERY confusing o.O). my 5X5 i think i got a time of under 8 minutes which was sweet...4X4 times haven't changed...and my best on the 3X3 is still 28 seconds (and i used the layer by layer method XD. possibly one of the fastest times using this method to, as its the slowest one =p). _________________

I solved a 5x5 for the first time a few weeks ago at a friend's house. \o/
TBH, it was mostly luck because I can't come close anymore. I can solve all but 2 of the edges because I just can't figure out a sequence to make them match up. <_< _________________

I learned how to do one last summer, but I never had one of my own till 2-3 months ago.
I usually get around 1 min - 1 min 20.
I've solved everything from 2 - 7 (with a bit of help along the way).
The 7x7 took me an entire hour to do the first (and only ) time i tried it.
I'd probably learn how to do the 5x5 and up on my own, but I don't have one. I'd also work on the 4x4 more if the one I have wasn't sucky. _________________

I learned towards the end of the last semester. My cube sucks but I can get about 1:20 to 1:30 most of time. I don't time myself often at all, but my fastest out of the few times i have timed myself is 1:14.
I also have a 4x4. Its fun too, but the parity sucks. |

Roux method is the best, only like 5 steps and you don't need to memorise like 10 thousand algorithms.
I use roux and usually solve in 30-40 seconds. |

I solved one once. I got so excited that I threw it on the ground and it broke. _________________

I managed to solve mine in 26 seconds with a 3 move cross and PLL skip but I usually average 45 seconds. _________________

i got down to 24 seconds with fridrich method and averaged around 35 seconds but havent touched a cube in a couple months so probably down to 45-50 at this point...i would recommend picking up cubing to anyone who has time to kill on road trips or just at home put some music on and solve the cube like 50 times and a 4 hour car trip goes by quick
