I live in West Michigan, and some friends and I are planning on taking a camping/road trip. We have a truck and a tow-camper and want to just get away for a week. We have no problem just going campground to campground and whatnot, but I was wondering what the laws are regarding just parking somewhere for the night and sleeping there. Is there anywhere you can just park and sleep in a camper and have in be legal?
Otherwise, does anyone know some good michigan/indiana/illinois campgrounds? |

EDIT
Wow, totally misread what you were saying. Never mind this, just go find a deserted parking lot or something I guess? Or some place that's free, I guess they might exist, but most official campgrounds make you pay to stay. _________________

I see people in RVs all the time in the Walmart parking lot. Looks like a good time. _________________

Nice, that's what I wanted to hear.
Yeah, we decided that if we can for sure use my dad's camper, that we're going to just head due south and whenever night comes, we'll park at a store and sleep. And when half the week's up, we'll just head back.
It should be fun. |

Just chiming in about the general case for anyone else who might care: the rules about sleeping in one's car (or camper) vary wildly on a state-by-state (and municipality-by-municipality) basis. Some places are very motorist friendly, where pulling over to pretty much any safe location is fair game; others are much less so, where even sleeping in your car at rest stops along the interstate is forbidden. And others fall somewhere in between, of course: "you can sleep in your car at rest stops, but your car isn't allowed to stay at the rest stop for more than eight consecutive hours" - that sort of thing.
Yep, Wal-Mart presently has pretty camper-friendly rules and is a fairly viable choice. But for those of us in less Wal-Mart-dense stretches, it boils down to a "research the matter online / heed local signage" sort of affair. (Sigh.) _________________

Everyone's forgetting the real way. Contrary to popular belief, dropping your pants onstage actually does deploy star power. Either that or I made a complete ass of myself at my last tournament. |
