I was going to post this in the Misc. GH Discussion, but decided this was the better place.

We've heard of both of the bands through the two video games known as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Come to think of it, they're almost the same thing. Let's examine a bit more closely:

- High and low vocals.
- OMGWTFBBQ epic guitar solos.
- Both sing about war and sorrow and crap.
- Both have a 3-pack of DLC in their respective games.

4 points to say these bands are alike. And, you have to admit, they are ridiculously similar. Just listen to them both if you don't believe me. Now, here's the question:

Which do you prefer, both in GH/RB and musically? Do you think one dominates the other, or vice versa? ScoreHero Forums is all about opinions, do your part, and post here.

Well, I really don't care for either of them musically, and I have to say they are not that much alike, except from a rythm game point of view. All the 7 songs are alot of fun to play though, but personally I prefer the Dragonforce songs, cause they have pretty much everything I want in a hard GH/RB song.

I like Malmsteen's style more for a listening sense, but the D4 songs are more fun to play in GH.

Yngwie malmsteen.... by far..... There is just no competition. And no they are not similar. At all.

Dragonforce is a power metal band, Yngwie is a neo-classical metal outfit. Dont call me a genre nazi, but there is a huge difference. In fact I see veeeeery little similarity. I can name plenty of bands that fit (well, except for the DLC) the same things, but have little to no similarity to dragonforce.

From a guitarists point of view, yngwie is... perfect. His incredibly fast solos, but mainly his beautiful..... beautiful neo-classical style. Herman just doesnt even compare.
Second, yngwie really isnt about the vocals. Its for his playing. But with "ripper" in the game.... wow.

And of course the insane amount of repeatitivity in dragonforce. Not to mention the point were sometimes, it just sounds plain stupid. Were he just tries to make it sound as complicated as possible.

Idk... maybe its just me... but I dont think you can compare yngwie to dragonforce. Just no contest.

I just cant say this:

The first Malmsteen album is quite good, with lots of variety and texture in the playing. My personal favorite off the album is "Icarus Dream Suite." The second album has the notable addition of Jeff Scott Soto, who is a tremendous singer.

Dragonforce, while I like certain songs from them, have extremely little variety in their entire catalog. Their first album is their best, as it doesn't go quite as overboard with the keyboards and the layers and layers of the same thing - you can actually hear riffs on "Disciples of Babylon," for example. By the third album, songs were starting to sound even more similar, and any bite or attack in the guitar sound was drowned out by other production elements. Despite this, there are moments of inspired melody - the bridge on "Operation Pound and Ground" is just stunning.

I don't know too much about Malmsteen's later albums, but I'll take the first two over any Dragonforce album.

The first thing I thought when I read the name of the topic is..

'Why the hell is he/she comparing the two??'

As ganondorf901 has stated, there is just no competition. I don't know aboutthe Gh/Rb series since I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore and haven't played the series....for about a year. (And before that, about another year also..)

But musically. Seriously, looking at Malmsteen, I think he's the better player, I think. I mean cleaner, come on! You can catch live performances of him shredding on a nylon classical guitar, and you rarely hear a buzz or...any of that sort. Herman Li just uses too much distortion,
I have to see one video where he plays on a classical guitar like Malmsteen or Elec guitar with a clean sound. Then again that would be kinda ugly, shredding an Elec guitar via clean, but my point is I wanna see to what his point does his technique stretch, musically.

And malmsteen, come on...alongside Ritchie Blackmore and a few others (for some reason I can't think of) he and them others were one of the first to start the neo-classical genre. Dragonforce however, started as a power metal, and is now...well..a power metal band.

Oh yeah, so should I mention which guitarist/band do I prefer more :p?

Yngwie Malmsteen without question, ganondorf901 summed it up pretty well and basically said what I would've posted.

I think I have to agree with pretty much everyone here. Yngwie Malsteem's Rising Force is much better musically, but DForce is more fun to play. If Red Devil and Revolution Deathsquad were right next to each other in a huge list of songs to play, I'd choose RD. However, if that list was in my IPod, I'd choose Red Devil. You get where I'm going here.

Both get on my nerves far too much (I can only take so much shredding before I get bored of it).

But, definitely Yngwie for me, no competition. Now if only he'd learn to slow the hell down on solos...

What is it with the word "Force". Is physics popular in speed metal?
