I was recently having a discussion with a friend of mine about Jazz and Blues. I don't really know many artists from either genre, but when I do listen to them I do like what I hear. But that makes me think, why don't I listen to it more often if I do like it. Then I realize that I don't listen to them because I'm "never in the mood" to listen to the genres. This doesn't just go for these, I find this the case with a lot of genres, like pop, hip-hop/rap (the good kind), pop-punk, punk rock, etc. I usually find myself listening to hard rock/metal, but I can't quite figure out why I'm never "in the mood" to listen to some of the other genres of music. I do recognize that the kind of music that I like, I like to give me energy and be fast and highly instrument driven, but that shouldn't stop me from listening to music that I like. Does anyone else feel this way or have any idea why I'm like this?

This should get you In The Mood.

Seriously.... it's one of the best jazz/swing songs out there.

Haha it is, I love that song, it was a "OH SNAP I KNOW THAT SONG!" moment for me. Never knew the name.

I HATE THIS SONG! But that's because my jazz band played it so I'm sick of always playing the same thing repeatedly. It's not a bad song per say, but I am sick of it for now. Funny thing is I thought this thread was about this song when I saw the title.

Anyway, have you only listened to blues and swing, or have you ventured into fusion, because lots of fusion songs have the possibility to get you pumped. Try some later Herbie Hancock to start if you haven't.

Try some of these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mitLcbHHz8 Billie Holiday - Crazy He Calls Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-Yk4gW-dIU Dean Martin - Ain't That a Kick in the Head
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aL9K1IgzZg Dean Martin - Sway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8Tiz6INF7I Ray Charles - Hit the Road Jack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0cZs-X0bb0 Roy Brown - Mighty, Mighty Man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0cZs-X0bb0 Duke Ellington - Take the "A" Train
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2S1I_ien6A Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyLjbMBpGDA Louis Armstrong - When the Saints Go Marching In
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-xzfwDAn1I Louis Armstrong - Dream a Little Dream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEIDep_UMmk Bobby Darin - Beyond the Sea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUlbzBk2x8o Bobby Darin - I Got Rhythm (sorry for bad quality)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpNk860pTO4 Harry Belafonte - Jump in the Line
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW-ejksVpbA Guy Lombardo - Love Me or Leave Me (good if you enjoy the ensemble sound of big band)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYLbrZAko7E Count Basie - Swingin' the Blues
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j6avX7ebkM Ella Fitzgerald - Summertime
And pretty much the entire Fallout 3 soundtrack

Unfortunately my knowledge in Jazz is very limited, but I do enjoy Big Band and Swing era music. There's a nice mix of hits from the 30's - 60's in there, including Swing, Big Band, Blues, R&B, Pop, and even some mambo tracks. Trust me, once you start listening to this stuff, you can't stop.

I see where you're coming from on the "in the mood" stuff. I'm rarely in the mood to listen to a particular genre, I just always blast through whatever is on my "favorites" playlist even though there is tons of other music I like. Though sometimes on an angry day I'm in the mood for some heavier type metal (Amon Amarth is as heavy as I go haha).

As for some jazz to get into, check out Michael Buble and Harry Connick, Jr. My knowledge of jazz is also limited, but Michael Buble is sort of like the modern-day Sinatra. He does covers of several of the songs linked above me, but he does plenty of other original songs.

Feelin' Good is one of my favorites. (Coincidentally, Muse did a cover of this song too...)

(Not going to lie, seeing the title of this thread without reading the OP all I could think of was this )
